3. Name common Vietnamese dishes and ingredients
4. Request the bill and understand basic restaurant etiquette
5. Describe taste (delicious, spicy, sweet, etc.)
6. Use measure words for food items

### Lesson Plan (120 minutes)

#### 1. Warm-up & Review (15 min)

#### 2. Presentation: Food Vocabulary & Restaurant Language (20 min)

**Vietnamese Cuisine Introduction:**
- Show images of popular Vietnamese dishes
- Introduce core vocabulary:
  - Phở (noodle soup) - most famous
  - Bánh mì (sandwich) - French influence
  - Cơm (rice) - staple food
  - Bún (vermicelli)

**Visual Learning:**
- Display food flashcards
- Model pronunciation
- Students repeat

**Key Dishes Detail:**
- **Phở:** Phở bò (beef), Phở gà (chicken)
- **Bánh mì:** Various fillings
- **Nem/Chả giò:** Spring rolls (fresh vs fried)

#### 3. Pronunciation Practice (15 min)

#### 4. Guided Practice: Menu Reading & Ordering (25 min)

**Activity 1: "Menu Exploration"**
- Provide sample Vietnamese restaurant menu (bilingual)
- Students work in pairs
- Identify items they recognize
- Circle items they'd like to try
- Teacher explains unfamiliar items

**Activity 2: "Order Building"**
- Teach ordering structure:

- Half students are servers, half are customers

**Activity 2: "Food Preference Interviews"**
- Pairs interview each other about food preferences
- Questions:
  - Bạn thích món ăn gì? (What food do you like?)
  - Bạn thích đồ uống gì? (What drink do you like?)
  - Bạn ăn cay được không? (Can you eat spicy food?)

**Activity 3: "Ordering Challenge"**
- Groups of 3-4
- Create restaurant order for whole group
- Must include: appetizer, main dish for each, drinks, dessert
- Present order to class in Vietnamese

**Materials:** Props (menus, play money, order pads), table settings, dialogue cards

#### 6. Application Activity: Food Show & Tell (10 min)

**Activity: "My Favorite Vietnamese Dish"**
- Students share (if they've tried Vietnamese food)
- OR research one Vietnamese dish to present:
  - Name in Vietnamese
  - What's in it?
  - Why they want to try it (or why they liked it)
  - Is it ngọt, mặn, cay, chua?

**Alternative: "Create Your Own Order"**
- Using vocabulary learned
- Write complete restaurant order
- Share with class
- Class votes on most interesting order

**Materials:** Food images (if needed), presentation notes

#### 7. Wrap-up & Homework (5 min)

**Review Game: "Food Auction"**
- Teacher "auctions" food items (flashcards)
- Students "bid" by saying item name in Vietnamese
- Fastest correct pronunciation "wins" the card

**Homework Assignment:**

1. **Restaurant Visit (Optional but Encouraged!) (60 min):**
   - Visit local Vietnamese restaurant
   - Try to order in Vietnamese (bring this week's dialogues!)
   - Take photo of menu
   - Write reflection: What did you order? What was it like?

2. **Menu Creation (30 min):**
   - Create your own Vietnamese restaurant menu
   - Include at least 15 items
   - Categorize: appetizers, mains, drinks, desserts
   - Add prices in đồng (Vietnamese currency)
   - Be creative! Include drawings/images

3. **Vocabulary Practice (20 min):**
   - Food vocabulary flashcards
   - Practice with app
   - Record yourself saying each food item

4. **Dialogue Writing (20 min):**

- Street food culture is huge - best food is often on the street!

- Often mixed with condensed milk (cà phê sữa)
- Coffee shop culture important socially

### Success Indicators

Students successfully completed Week 5 if they can:
- ✓ Order basic meal in Vietnamese
- ✓ Name at least 10 food/drink items
- ✓ Express food preferences (like/dislike)
- ✓ Use measure words with food items
- ✓ Ask for the bill
